What did I wear? Jean shorts, closed-toe shoes, and an old tee-shirt in the back of my car that is supposed to be either pajamas or a rag. How did I do on that verbal test? I missed a lot of sentence correction, which I went over, corrected, and dismissed with an expletive as I left my house. What did I study before? I hastily finished up the verbal section of a practice test, which I had started the night or day before. What did I eat before? Coconut-based ice cream. Was I nervous? Yes, but not until 10:55am, as I was driving to the testing center. Since the GMAT has lower standards for its writing section than the GRE does, my 6.0 AW score (88th percentile) is actually not as impressive as my 5.0 AWA (92nd percentile). Many questions on the IR are similar to GRE quant questions. I am pleased though not surprised by my perfect scores on AW and IR. I enjoyed putting in that work, because I enjoy GMAT quant. Though it is roughly equivalent to my 167Q GRE math score, it required a lot more time and effort on top of what I had already done for the GRE quant section. My quant score, I feel, is well-deserved. There’s also a possibility that my high degree of experience with the GRE, which has answer choices that are worded differently than the GMAT’s, might have shied me away from the correct answers on those RC questions. If I were to take the test again, I would probably get the Official Verbal Guide supplement and do all the hard passages from that one in addition to re-doing the hard ones from the OG. My first passes on the other question types were not nearly successful only after two or three passes did I really improve my understanding of and accuracy on SC, DS, CR, and PS. Ironically, the two verbal questions that I missed were on Reading Comprehension, which I scored 150/150 on in the Official Guide on my first pass. On my test and many others’, these high scores no longer exist. Adding to the frustration is that my 47V resulted from missing only two verbal questions: the newer, shorter (yet oddly, more expensive) GMAT no longer has 50V and 48V scores. Four times out of five, a 47V 49Q results in a 770, and I have seen, online, 45V 47Q scores that result in 760s.

That’s just the luck of the GMAT there are a few instances of people who have had perfect raw scores who got 790s, because they were given an “easier” test.ĭespite these considerations, I scored in the 99th percentile and within 10 points of what had been my practice test score on the older, longer GMAT, and the apparent mismatch between my verbal and quant scores, 47 and 49, respectively, indicate that I might have been given an “easier” test. Furthermore, differences in the difficulty of exams mean that, no matter how well someone does in their raw score, they might have a ceiling that’s 10 points lower than it would be on another test. Thus, many ambitious test takers end up taking the GMAT more than once, since one mistake can have a huge effect on the overall score. A smaller sample size (of questions) leads to results that are more skewed, per individual. Those of you who have taken statistics know that a smaller sample size leads to more skewed (and less smooth) results. The GMAT is a tough test, and since it was shortened in 2018, it’s gotten ever harder to get a high score, raw and percentile-wise.
